A brief history of Mercedes Benz legendary SL

The legendary Mercedes Benz SL Class now on its 7th generation, has been in production since 1954. The SL Class holds a special place in the hearts of many drivers as the story of its conception is a fascinating piece of automotive history. The very first “SL” the 1952 300 SL was designed as Grand Prix race car. At the suggestion of American car importer Max Hoffman and with the intention of satisfying the wealthy Americans post war need for performance luxury cars Mercedes agreed to turn it’s purpose-built race car into a full fledged production car.
