How to Win While Negotiating a Car Deal

When the FBI is negotiating a hostage case and there are 4 hostages, they can’t just save 2 and leave the other 2 for the other side… That wouldn’t be FBI anymore.

Negotiating a car deal can be tricky, especially when the goal is unclear. There are a few important factors when buying a vehicle and making sure that you get exactly what best fits your wants and needs at the best price. However, sometimes we think that the best and lowest price is the best deal.

My perspective changed one day while buying a car from one of the best auction lanes in the nation, which also had the best auctioneer. He said something in the midst of a bidding battle that really stuck with me, and the outcomes were never the same. The vehicle was super clean and had a great color combination that was also highly optioned… preceding a similar model, but a not so attractive one.

He said “Guys, it is not the low price, but what you are getting – and you’re getting a hell of a car here – being cheap won’t get you this one.”

People stay away from the cheapest Ferrari on the market for a reason. The wrong red on a Ferrari might not sell for a year… the same is true for many cars, Ferrari is not the only car.

What I also realized is that all vehicles sell at the auction; high price and low price, highly equipped and standard, clean as well as rough, one-of-a-kind and not so much. As people say, there is a car for everyone. But are you just like everyone else?

Handshake and handing over keys

With us, it’s precision that counts. And just like we are attracted to the very unique specs with distinct makes, models, and trims – while shopping at the auction and buying the cleanest cars we can find – we attract people that want the same. And we understand that we don’t attract everyone.

The reality is, you can find cars on the market, as well as in auctions, that are less expensive than others. But is that what will truly satisfy you? Is that the final outcome you are after – the price? What if you negotiate and get the best price on the market, but not the best deal? Are you truly winning in that case?

We buy these vehicles because we want to, because they are better than the other ones. Price is important, but what’s more important is what you are getting and keeping for months and years… wouldn’t you think?
